Campus Spotlight: The College of Charleston

During her most recent campus visit, College Solutions CEO Margaret Baudinet explored the College of Charleston and immediately understood why it continues to captivate students from across the country. In this campus spotlight, she shares what makes this historic, coastal campus such a standout, from its academic strengths to its effortless blend of charm, culture, and city life.

After visiting hundreds of colleges throughout my career, I can confidently say that the College of Charleston has earned a top spot on my list of favorite urban campuses. It is vibrant, welcoming, and beautifully woven into one of the most charming cities in the country.

The moment you step onto campus, you realize how seamlessly it blends with downtown Charleston. Being just a short walk from King Street means students have immediate access to incredible restaurants, fun shops, and plenty of ways to unwind between classes.

Charleston has a way of charming its visitors. The city feels a bit like Paris with its architectural elegance, a bit like the French Riviera with its light and color, and fully Southern with its coastal warmth. Pastel façades, wrought iron balconies, and palm-lined streets create an atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and enjoy where you are.

And speaking of enjoying where you are, the food is exceptional. I had dinner at 82 Queen and their fried green tomatoes were the best I have ever tasted. The next morning, I had brunch at Husk, where the mimosas were so good I briefly considered becoming a brunch-influencer. Charleston takes its hospitality seriously and it shows.

On campus, the live oaks draped in Spanish moss and the historic buildings give the College of Charleston a timeless feel. Students study in the Cistern Yard, relax in shaded courtyards, and flow easily between campus and city life. It is a place that feels grounded in history yet full of energy.

The Carter Real Estate Center is also an impressive asset, especially for students interested in real estate or urban development. The Commercial Real Estate Finance program offers hands-on experience in a city where old-meets-new on nearly every block. Charleston becomes a living laboratory for students who want to understand the industry from the inside out.

Overall, visiting the College of Charleston is a delightful experience. The campus is beautiful, the academics are strong, the city is vibrant, and the overall environment feels both inspiring and enjoyable. It is easy to see why students love it and why it remains one of the most memorable urban campuses I’ve had the pleasure of visiting.
